{Guest Post} From Painted Porcelain to Lovely Room

Blue and white porcelain originated in China and was later copied by European and American firms. Its ancient heritage makes it a classic choice for traditional interiors. The blue and white combination, however, can work in every style room.

At Home via

Blue and white tiles set the tone for this crisp blue and white living room. Dark blue walls are offset by white mouldings and plantation shutters. Love the spots of bright green.

Nautical bedrooms

Living by a water-body usually means that some influence of that blue,white,and grey may seep into your decor. I like the idea of being true to your surroundings, the history of your place and using what is around you for inspiration in your home.

A recent post on the Completely Coastal Blog has some lovely images for chic nautical bedrooms.

Framed signal flags, striped bedding and touches of red can be replicated anywhere.

I like this blue. The framed ship print and dark tones of the wood complement each other.

Oars are beautiful. And unexpected over a bed.

I don’t see many nautical-influences in Indian coastal homes, though. Whether we live by a river (as we do) or have a glimpse of the sea, Indian apartments don’t (generally) bother with themes. Coastal homes often have colonial influences with antiques, cane furniture, dark, gleaming wood. I’d love to see a nautical home in India – do you know of any?

For me, this works because of the grey wall (and that dog). I like that collection of vintage calendar art / prints / packaging.

An elegant bedroom for my dreams

I was procrastinating browsing when I stumbled upon this vision of loveliness. There’s something about this very simple and extremely elegant room that appeals to me. Perhaps it is the compactness of it all. There is none of that (not apparent, anyway) huge, white space that we see often in decor mags which most of us don’t have access to. This one seems more manageable, more real.

I love the luxuriousness of the bed, the simplicity of the bench, the elegance of the head-board. I’m not crazy about the brick wall, but it does looks nice. I can totally see myself in this space and baby would be welcome too. What do you think? Like?

Co-sleeping nurseries

It’s probably the small spaces we are used to, or perhaps a cultural thing, but co-sleeping is the norm rather than the exception in India. For millions of families in villages or in city apartments, independent rooms for each family member is unheard of. Children sleep with their parents – on a mat, on a bed, in their own bed, but often in the same room.

We are no different. Although we have a house that is large by any standards, we don’t have any extra space for a separate room for M. Our bedroom is larger than what most  people have, so I really shouldn't be grumbling…

The trick is making an adult space child-friendly and not letting said child take over adult space. And while it is common (in the West) for newborns to be in the same room as the parents, most children are soon moved to their own rooms. I haven’t, therefore, found many spaces online that could help me address this decorating dilemma.

Twins: How did they do that?

I came across these images from Coastal Living via Artnlight. Isn’t this the SAME bedroom with a different colour scheme in each phoot? How did they do that? Changed the headboard fabric, pillows, bolsters to match the lamps, different footstools…

Just goes to show you how you can have two very different looks if you just play around with colour.

House Tour: Sean Ward & Stephen Fillmore

I love these photos from the Toronto home of Sean Ward and Stephen Fillmore, featured in Style at Home (found via My Notting Hill). This is sort of what I’d like my home to look like – light filled, with stuff in it, but not cluttered, cosy, yet not cramped.

 

The bathroom is a little more crowded than I would have liked, but I’m enjoying the wooden bureau, the bench and the lamp – that’s really unusual in this room. 

Quilt heaboard

So easy to do. Via Martha (of course).

Purchase a wooden drapery rod, two brackets, and hanging hardware from a home-supply store. Paint the drapery rod and brackets to match the bedroom walls, and let dry. Install the brackets above the bed, positioning them at the desired height, and put the rod in place. Drape the quilt over the rod, lining up the bottom edges so that it hangs evenly.

I'd hang something like a grand old silk sari to give it an Indian flavour and a burst of rich colour. What do you think?

Beautiful Bedrooms

I'm a zombie. Still waiting for baby to settle into a night time (and day-time, for that matter) routine. Sleep cycles are haywire and clutter has grown firm roots all over the house.

While I'm struggling to keep surfaces clear, clothes folded, blogs read, articles written (all while baby pretends to sleep), I dream of peaceful, serene, beautiful and CLEAN bedrooms like these. Aaaaah.
